It is estimated that 20% of individuals with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) will be diagnosed with cancer before 20 years of age; however, it is not yet possible to determine when and in whom cancer will develop. Thus, there is life-long uncertainty associated with LFS and this uncertainty is the focus of much of the counseling and medical management of LFS patients. To increase understanding of the challenges inherent in the testing of children for underlying cancer predisposing condition, we explored parent-child communication. This qualitative study interviewed 14 families with an LFS history who proceeded with genetic testing of their child/children. This presentation will describe the factors that influence when parents decide to initiate a conversation about the genetic testing process and the subsequent test results with their child/children, barriers and/or facilitators to disclosure conversations and the manner in which parents communicated the testing results.
